Gravel Racing and the Evolution of Cycling with Ian Moore

This week I sit down with my dear friend and bicycle compadre Ian Moore to talk about our evolutions through the sport of cycling, the Crusher in the Tushar, and our upcoming plant-based cycling camp. It’s a good conversation covering a broad range of bicycle related topics, and it’s always good to catch up with Ian. Hope you enjoy it!

Breaking Out of the Vegan Echo Chamber with the Vegan Bros

This week’s episode is a bit of a unique one. Our two guests — Matt & Phil Letten — are known as the “Vegan Bros”, and definitely fit the bro characteristic. After growing up in the Midwest and being about as anti-vegan as they come, these brothers eventually made the switch to veganism after seeing the shocking realities of what goes on in factory farms. Fast forward through their time spent as activists and social media entrepreneurs, they just released a brand new book, Vodka is Vegan: A Manifesto for Better Living and Not Being an Asshole. Their goal is to step outside of the vegan echo chamber and reach the mainstream with their message, which is to live more compassionately by not being an angry vegan, and reaching people where they’re at. Their book appeals to a sector of the population that many vegans write off as being impossible to convince to start eating compassionately, yet the Vegan Bros believe they’re the easiest to reach. The book is chalk full of helpful strategies for vegan living as well as supporting others in their journey. It’s worth a read, especially for the bro in your life or the new vegan who’s not sure how to talk about veganism with skeptical friends and family. In the episode, we discuss:

  • Why we need to break out of the vegan echo chamber
  • Strategies for dealing with skeptical friends and family
  • The process and struggle of business and being an entrepreneur
  • How Matt and Phil dealt with being physically assaulted by vegans at a VegFest
  • How food tech will save the world
  • and more!

WARNING: this episode contains profane and crude language. The Vegan Bros don’t hold back in this conversation, and as we’re sure you know, we can unleash the potty mouth every once in a while. Probably smart to not listen to this one with the kids.

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Will Dugan — From Professional Cyclist to Vegan Waffle Extraordinaire

This week’s show is a good one. Obviously cycling is a huge part of my life and something that has brought me so much pleasure and meaning, and also so much struggle and negativity. Such is the case for so many athletes, amateur and professional alike. If you’ve been a listener of the show for a while, you’ve most likely heard my story of exercise addiction and struggle with restriction and burnout in the sport of competitive cycling many times, which eventually catalyzed my shift to a vegan lifestyle.

Will Dugan shares a very similar story. After growing up riding and racing bikes, Will turned professional with Team Type 1 and immediately began racing all over the world, including Korea and Belgium. He had some really solid results, such as a 2nd place on a stage and 3rd overall at the Tour of Korea. However, he began to fall prey to the pressures of professional cycling, such as insane training regimens and restrictive diets and soon found himself resenting the sport he fell in love with at a young age. This evolved into suddenly quitting the sport and developing a severe binge eating disorder which sucked him into a dark place of depression and anxiety.

Fast forward a few years, and he has transitioned to a vegan diet and launched a vegan Belgian waffle company, known as Vafels, and leads a charity group ride every month called Project Supertraining and has found a new love of the bicycle.

We talk about all of this and more in this epic conversation, in which Will shares some personal stuff (like his battle with binge eating disorder) for the first time publicly. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the conversation, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Be sure to check out my TEDx talk which was just released, and please feel free to share far and wide so we can spread the epic dumps revolution to all corners of the globe: http://bit.ly/epicdumps.

Plant-Based and Clean Meat: State of the Union with Dr. Liz Specht

Back for round 3, our dear friend Liz Specht of the Good Food Institute returns to the podcast for another fantastic conversation. As a senior scientist for GFI, she is in the trenches of nearly every aspect of the plant-based and clean meat food industries to support their development and awareness. We first talked to Liz in the very early days of the show, before she was even involved in this space, and then again when she had just started with GFI. Today, we talk about the crazy world of food tech, meat science, venture capital, and why she loves talking to meat industry executives. This is essentially the State of the Union when it comes to plant-based food and clean meat.

If you haven’t already, be sure to listen to our first two episodes with Liz, as we jump straight into things pretty quickly here without giving much context to her background as we discuss that at length in the last two episodes. You can find her first episode here and her second one here. We hope you enjoy this conversation!

Please fill out our survey! We are moving into the next phase of TFF and are planning on creating a variety of more in depth educational materials like coaching services and online courses to help take your plant-based lifestyle to the next level. We are giving away a free entry to our first group coaching/online course to a random person that fills out this short survey. We really appreciate your input and feedback!

Thanks for listening everyone.
