The Evidence-Based Trio: 3 Nutrients Every Plant Eater Needs

We constantly get questions about what supplements to take if you’re on a plant-based diet, which supplements we take, and why. What’s The Deal With Fasting?

Many of us have heard about these things, often knocking them as fads or extreme ways of living. However, there seems to be a lot of buzz lately about the benefits of fasting. So what does the science say? Well, you’re in the right place.

After hearing about the evidence behind time restricted feeding or intermittent fasting on Dr. Rhonda Patrick’s podcast and elsewhere, Aaron decided to try it out for himself. Alongside a regular sauna routine combined with an overall healthy, whole foods plant-based diet, he has seen profound benefits. From sleep quality to endurance gains, we’ve both felt the positive effects of eating our food within a 9 or 10 hour window during the day. But how does this actually work? What’s happening metabolically and physiologically to stimulate these effects? In true TFF What’s The Deal fashion, we set off to find out.

It’s been quite some time since we recorded a WTD episode, and that’s due to the immense amount of research and time it requires. With Aaron’s new kid on the block, changing jobs and moving, along with Jackson’s travel and school schedule, we simply didn’t have a ton of time to focus on this. But it’s definitely worth the wait; we covered everything from how fasting can potentially prevent disease at the cellular level, to how we feel it should be implemented in a practical fashion in everyday life. We zoom in to zoom out, and discuss this through an objective and evidence-based approach, so we hope you learn something new! How to Eat Plant-Based on a Budget with Toni Okamoto

When you optimize all three into a healthy, compassionate, and sustainable paradigm, an amazing way of living occurs. However, one of the biggest misconceptions about plant-based or vegan diets is that they are extremely elitist and expensive. You have to shop at Whole Foods. You have to eat goji berries to stay alive. You must get all of your produce at the farmer’s market, and it better be organic, damn it!

Well, we disagree with these sentiments. And this episode has been highly requested for quite some time. After mulling over how we wanted to formulate this episode for a while, we decided to invite on the master of this realm, Toni Okamoto of Plant-Based on a Budget to share her wisdom. Toni started Plant-Based on a Budget in 2012 in order to help people eat more plants without breaking the bank, and has since evolved into a huge platform that has everything from recipes to meal plans to how-to videos. She was also featured in the recent documentary What The Health. Suffice it to say, she knows her stuff on the topic of eating well and frugally.

The three of us sit down to share our very different perspectives and advice for eating plants on a budget. We debunk some of the major misconceptions on this topic, share tips, and talk about our favorite meals and ideas. Nathan Runkle on Mercy For Animals, The Future of Food, and Finding Your Voice

The conditions of factory farms are absolutely and utterly abominable. Once the two of us became aware of the realities of industrialized animal agriculture and the toll it takes on both the conscious, innocent beings that are a product of the system and the planet at large, we simply couldn’t support it any longer.

This week’s guest is a visionary in leading the charge towards changing this. Nathan Runkle is the founder and executive director of Mercy For Animals, an international animal rights organization that has over 120 employees and has been integral in changing policies, hearts, and minds towards making the world a more compassionate place for animals. He started the organization at 15 with zero resources and no real strategy – except one mission to save animals. Nathan just released a new book, titled Mercy For Animals, which chronicles his journey of starting MFA, stories of heroic undercover investigations and open rescues, the future of food, and more. It’s a fantastic look into the reasons behind ethical veganism and the plight that farm animals face in today’s food system.

Dr. Allen Lim on Exercise Hydration, Cooking From Skratch, and Putting Happiness First

Today we’re pleased to bring you our conversation with Dr. Allen Lim, a Ph.D Exercise Physiologist from the University of Colorado Boulder (Jackson’s Alma Mater), founder of the exercise hydration company Skratch Labs, lover of bikes, and proponent of eating food made from scratch. As Allen puts it – his parts are from China, made in the Philippines, and programmed in America. Allen grew up in Los Angeles, California and quickly developed a love for the bike, which allowed him to discover a passion for exercise physiology. He eventually did his Master’s and Ph.D in Boulder, researching the stress involved in exercise. He then went on to work on developing the PowerTap, one of the first tools used to measure power output on the bike, and began working for professional cycling teams at big races like the Tour de France. While doing this, he started realizing that athletes were doing much better performance wise when they were fed real food. Armed with his rice cooker and kitchen utensils, he began feeding these athletes simple but nourishing meals, and they responded very positively. He then created a witches’ brew cocktail in paint buckets of the perfect mix of sugar and electrolytes that was much easier on the gut than traditional sports drinks that he shared with his team. Soon, riders from other teams began asking for this drink and putting it in their bottles instead of their team’s sponsored drink products. And thus Secret Drink Mix, and eventually Skratch Labs, was born.

Allen has had a profound impact on the nutrition performance of athletes in cycling and beyond, shifting the culture away from a reliance on Powerbars and Gatorade into one focused on understanding how important making food from scratch can be. In this episode, we talk about the birth of Skratch, what about the mix makes it useful for hydration, general hydration strategies for athletes, and why we should stop talking about diet and just eat real food. We get into business, and how Skratch Labs operates from a happiness first perspective, and how important it is to just start when you develop a passion for something. Allen is funny, engaging, and has a lot of experience with a variety of subjects, so I hope you enjoy the conversation!

Ethan Brown on Disrupting the Food System with the Future of Protein

If you’ve been following Thought For Food for a while, you know that we’re obsessed with the idea of game-changing plant-based food tech companies coming in and disrupting the antiquated factory farming system. And Beyond Meat is one of those companies leading the charge. By gathering up a team of extremely talented and extremely smart scientists, researchers, and chefs, they are studying and analyzing what makes meat what it is. They then apply that understanding to figure out ways to make the same biological structure, specifically the protein structure, fat content, and nutrient makeup, from plants. With investors from the likes of Biz Stone and Bill Gates, Beyond Meat put itself on the map with its first product, the Beyond Chicken Strips, highly realistic chicken cutlets made from peas. They’ve since grown to including beefy crumbles, and last year launched the Beyond Burger (in Boulder!). This new product is outstanding. A raw burger patty that is being sold in the meat case at Whole Foods across the country and has been a smashing success. Beyond Meat is changing the game. And today, Jackson sits down with the company’s CEO, Ethan Brown, to talk about the latest news of what’s happening with Beyond Meat. We’ve been wanting to sit down with Ethan for ages, since we started the podcast really, because he is such a passionate, compassionate, and mission driven visionary that is so dedicated to eliminating the factory farming system. It was an amazing conversation covering a range of topic including:
